Moses: A Man of Selfless Dedication by Charles Swindoll

What the book's about: The life of Moses.

Why I read this book: During my youth ministry's recent retreat, I used the life of Moses as the basis for our exploration of self-image. To prepare for the retreat, I read this book, which is part of the Great Lives From God's Word series. For several years, this series has been my first choice for in-depth studies of Bible characters.

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Thumbs up. Though I don't always agree with the life applications each chapter provides, Swindoll's thorough examination of scripture is worth the price of the book. It continually enables the reader to see scripture and it's cast of characters in a new light.

Who I'd recommend this book for: Those wanting to learn about or more deeply explore the life of Moses.

Wanting to Be Her: Body Image Secrets Victoria Won't Tell You by Michelle Graham

What the book's about: All aspects of self-image, including what influences self-image, what scripture says about self-image, and tips for becoming content in the bodies God gave us.

Why I read this book: In preparation for my youth ministry's retreat on self-image.

My favorite quote from the book: "We have begun to confuse role models with cover models."

Thumbs up or thumbs down? Thumbs up.

Who I'd recommend this book for: High school girls. With it's journal prompts, this would be a great book for girls to work through individually as a devotional. Since each chapter also contains good discussion questions, it would also be an easy book to utilize for small group discussions. It's also one that would prompt rich, honest conversation about an important issue. Additionally, this book would work well as a discussion starter in mentoring relationships.
